Just checking in to say "hello".

If it hadn't been for Lillie Hecht (ca 1957) Trudi and I would not have started our "friendship."

We also have fond memories of "Tante" Bertha Guenzburger.

Would love to hear from you.

Fondly,

Hi, Murray,

I've been searching for your email address. Hope this gets through to you.

I caught your mug on the tube last night in the PBS documentary on My Lai.

I hope you are well.

I retired from 9 to 5 work as exec director of the Minnesota News Council after 14 stimulating years. Now I write, coach writers, teach at Colorado College and Cornell College of Iowa and perform a Jewish humor show I created.

Just back from San Miguel de Allende, where my wife, Trish, and I have spent part of the past four winters and plan to go back next year. One of our close friends who visits from Cape Cod at the same time is Ed Fouhy, an old CBS hand (also worked at NBC and ABC), and although we were in the Marine Corps and in Lebanon at the same time, and in the same business for decades, we never met until last year.

I'd love to hear from you. PLease add my email address to your blog list.

Cheers,

Gary

As qouted above Weyand said Westy just dosent get it .The war is unwinnable and we should find a dignified way out. Its too bad that the good general didnt follow up on this and blow the cover on the war. Your anonomous quoting of the general kept the war going also. The year I spent in RVN 67-68, as an interrogator with the 525 MI Brigade, 14,000 Americans died and maybe at least 100,000 Vietnamese, a lot of them civilian. The following years of the war another 15,000 or so US died and 100,000s of Vietnamese. You and the generals silence share in responsibility for this carnage. The media and the generals followed suit in Iraq and Afghanistan-the media for being lap dogs of the administation and the generals going along to get along. There is no accountability in this country. The beat goes on.

According to Yahoo news, the docks/port at Labadee for Royal Caribbean Cruise lines is un-damaged. Why is it only the cruise ships docking there? Can't relief ships with supplies & aid to the Haitians also dock there? Again, it is another location to get supplies onto the island and then transport it inland into the interior of Haiti.

MAYBE CuBA STILL HAS THE MEANS FOR A LOW-TECH ENTRY TO DELIVER & TRANSPORT THE SUPPLIES?...
I understand that the Harbour/docks are damaged in Haiti from the quake and that's why everyone is trying to get in & out of the small airport... Don't any of the military branches of todays nations still have amphibious landing craft? Wouldn't that be another way to get supplies in to the more outlaying regions of the Haiti? Haiti is an island. There MUST be other inlets, bays, or harbours with beach-heads that could be utilized with the landing craft... In other words, make in-roads into the interior thru other means beside the air... Since some of the roads seem to be damaged, what about low tech transport methods? Use the amphibious craft to make the beach landings with burrows in the hold. Load up the burrows on shore & cart the stuff in that way. (The burrows could later be killed for the meat to feed the Haitans.) If not burrows, how about ATV's?...

Murray, I am a 1990 grad of the USC fellowship. I wrote in 2008 for Newsday about a Haitian American woman who now needs help. (reprinted in Hartford C - http://www.courant.com/topic/ny-lfcov0928,0,18022.story). I have been with her three times to Haiti including to her sister Claudette's home for the needy, now decimated. She needs a way to get down with hundreds of pounds of supplies., The B. Globe may be doing a story. See the web site above and email me for more. Can you help?

Govenor Palin may not be a good presidential candidate, but that does not make her not newsworthy nor does it make her a silly little woman. Mocking her ghost-written memoir is also inappropriate, politicians far more important and qualified than her have had their books ghost written. Being a good writer and a good politician are not talents distributed to all the same people. If anything it is a sign that the author recognizes his/her shortcomings, a critical trait for a politician. Gov. Palin was once America's most popular governor. That is something to be noted in a democracy where popular opinion matters. She was noted for her ability to reach across the aisle and accomplish things. Obama for all his talk of bipartisanship has so far attracted only a single GOP vote in the house for his health care bill. Obama is all talk and little results. He promised to empty Gitmo. That deadline has passed. He may have achieved popularity abroad, but we have seen little dividends from it. No trade agreements have been signed, even the already negotiated ones with South Korea and Columbia. No environmental agreements have been made. The Japanese base issues remain unresolved. China keeps their currency policy. The list goes on and on. I want results and I want them now. Afghanistan was the one war Obama promised we would make every effort to win and now weeks have gone by with no decisions either way. Obama should be sending in thousands more troops and getting commitments from NATO for thousands more. This war is winnable. I want to see it won.

A few months from now will mark the end of the first year of the Obama administration.

It remains to be seen what the imprint of the administration will be on U.S. International Broadcasting.

Today, numerous country and region-targeted entities compete for limited resources, and the will of Congress as expressed in specific legislative language directing that English and other services be restored, continues to be ignored by the BBG.

At least for now, it appears that pressure (expressed to Congress in a number of hearings in recent years by Pentagon-linked experts) to simply turn over government-funded broadcasting to the Pentagon as part of the "hearts and minds" campaign has lessened, it's by no means assured that this won't happen in the future.

Meanwhile, the very existence of VOA Worldwide English and other broadcasts continues to hang on razor thin margins of MILLIONS of dollars. What a shame.

While one can't deny that shortwave as a major medium of communication has given way to the Internet and local FM (a tour around the world with a WI-FI radio will confirm that) the extent to which the United States has handed over the airwaves to others -- notably China, Russia and Cuba -- in recent years is downright embarrassing.

Bravo to Murray and others who continue to try to point out to those willing to listen what has happened and what the potential solutions are.
